living stress free

What makes me, me.

"You have one life, live it without stress. Living simply and getting back to nature is the best way I know to de-stress. I innovate products out of necessity to achieve simplicity and comfort, off-the-grid in the great outdoors – be mobile, travel light and live simply."

My beloved daughter Adeline and my dog Minnie. They have  explored the great outdoors with me since they were both babies.

This is where we connect and shed stress.

Adventures with My Daughter and My Injury

When my beloved daughter was born, I sold my cherished 33 foot Hunter sailboat that I had been restoring for years (1977 Cherubini design) and bought a camper trailer, more kayaks and more SUPs – much more suitable for a child. A young  daughter introduced new challenges to my Tom Sawyer lifestyle, still, I couldn't  wait to share my love for the ocean with my beloved Adeline! I took her to Navarre FL when she was 2 years old. While carrying her, plus her stuff, plus my fishing gear and everything else we needed for the day, I pinched a nerve in my neck – which put a damper on the trip for me, though I made sure she had a blast. Despite the setback, seeing the joy on my daughter’s face made it all worthwhile. Still, I felt like a freakin mule lugging the basic necessities for the day from the condo across a 30 yard parking lot, then across another parking lot, plus another 50 yards of soft sand! Also, the Navarre pier is 515 yards long plus 25 stair-steps upwards and back down! Try carrying a 2 year old and your necessary gear along that journey! (After the trip, and years f trial and error, I knew there were better solutions with better products. She loved the view once we reached the end of the pier – sea turtles, dolphins, sunset and ocean as far as the eye could see. It dawned on me that this was the first time she had ever seen anything like this... time just stood still for a moment. The scene made the best water park in the world seem like kiddy pool. I wrote a poem about the trip (below) if anyones wishes to read it.

Another sunset on the beach with my daughter Adeline.

TENETS FOR MY STRESS-FREE LIFESTYLE

  • Tenet 1. Stay true to harmonious life principles. Life is simply about giving love and being loved – You have one life, live it without stress. When a decision disturbs your gut feelings and disturbs your sense of peace, it's probably a decision that is not creating harmony in your life. Follow your heart and your gut instincts, and keep your mind educated as to help guide and direct your more visceral instincts – and, as always, be mobile, travel light, live simply and encourage other people to do the same along the way.
  • Tenet 2.  Learn to live out of a backpack or carry-on suitcase & backpack combo. When I arrive at a hotel, I am wearing a jacket, T-shirt, light pants over a swimsuit and comfortable oofos flip-flops or oofos closed toe shoes. My carry-on suitcase and my small Northface backpack contains: my laptop, toiletries, cologne, razor, a change of clothes (dress pants and collared shirt), ziplock bag for wet or dirty clothes, iPhone, small USB charging block and wallet. You will be shocked by how easy it is to travel light and have everything you need to get through the day comfortably! I wake at 5am, meditate, pray, 20 min on my beloved bio-electric-magnetic BEMER unit, then hand-held pulse massager, take dog on a sunrise walk, laundry, dishes, prepare food, take my daughter to school and then I am usually off to a local resort hotel for swimming, exercise, hot tub,  business calls, business meetings and breakfast.
  • Tenet 3.  Resort hotel day passes are key. A $20 to $35 day pass package provides: free parking, beautiful lobbies and dining spaces for business meetings, swimming pools, hot tubs, places to exercise and shower, economical buffets ($18) or beautiful places to enjoy your own prepared food, business contact opportunities, reasonably priced massages when needed. Even if you don't purchase a day pass, most hotels provide these emenities for free just for walking in: parking, a beautiful lobby and dinning spaces to meet and do business, water,  lounge areas, outdoor sunset seating areas, areas to eat your own prepared food, rest areas and areas to freshen up, shave etc.
  • Tenet 4.  Book out your vacations early. Start about  January or even November of the previous year. This will ensure you get the spot you want and cheap flights booked on non-peak days.
  • Tenet 5.  You can rent a pickup truck from Uhaul. If you're traveling with three persons, a few hundred bucks gets you a pickup truck for ten days vs. a rental car at $800 or $1000!
  • Tenet 6.  Own a Tiny Home – RV designed that is street legal. Use as your main place of residence, and use the money you save to spend on your family, travel/vacation, retirement and inheritance assets for your children.
  • Tenet 7.  Only purchase used cars and befriend a good mechanic (that you pay well) to maintain them. New cars loose their value the minute you drive them off the lot.
  • Tenet 8.  Never, ever spend money on things that will not enrich the lives of you or your family. Take the requisite time to carefully consider purchases and frequent garage sales and thrift stores before you buy new. Always buy good quality items that last.
  • Tenet 9.  Stay clear of garbage disposals and dishwashing machines, they are worthless pieces of junk that always break.
  • Tenet 10.  Your body is a temple. Meditate, pray, learn to cook, eat healthy, try not to consume alcohol and get good rest with some type of humidifier – I  actually use a hot wet towel and eucalyptus oil with a USB powered fan passing over it. (standard humidifiers bread mold.)
  • Tenet 11.  Find a good nurse practitioner that combines traditional medicine with holistic solutions.
  • Tenet 12.  Find a good financial adviser
  • Tenet 13.  Your heart is your compass. Do not let other people disrespect you or your family – have good boundaries, breathe deep and slow when you are provoked and don't speak until you are ready – create  the requisite time between feelings and action to make good decisions.
  • Tenet 14.  Always be patient with children. They are misguided by their youth and have not developed healthy coping skills, however, they are very special gifts to remind us of what we have lost touch with in ourselves!
  • Tenet 15.  Engage with nature and animals as often as possible. Travel with your pets every chance you get.

Early days – modifying my 12' G1 Raptor kayak with a sail rig and some tandem, off-the-shelf more comfortable seats. The G1 and G2 Raptor Kayaks (West Coast made) are amazing kayaks weighing in at around 65 lbs – Extremely stable and extremely comfortable when fitted with a nice seat with good lumbar support. I usually add memory foam in the lower lumbar area for extra support to accommodates my back injury.

I just started designing and building what I needed.

I wanted convenience and comfort during the excursions with my daughter – I tried countless beach carts and kayak/SUP seats, only to find them lacking in one way or another. They were either flimsy, impractical, heavy or simply not suited to my needs as a traveler – we fly a lot, and my gear must be self-contained and flight-ready, and/or fit into suitcases and smaller rental vehicles. Basically, 75% of the stuff out there is just crap thrown on the market with a bow wrapped around it – engendering ridiculous expectations! Eventually, I just started building my own surf carts and kayak/SUP comfort seats right here in the USA. It has been a "happily ever after..."

HEART'S SET SAIL

(For Adeline 2014)

Walking along the shoreline

near the sand castles we’d made

the wind called from the distance

over water where dolphins played

Rising emerald tides
cross the open sea

traveling far to reach us
coming just for you and me

A wave came rushing through
leaning into the crest we brace
your trusting arms around me
everything felt in place

Your eyes held the sunset’s reflection

I paused to gaze a while

at the greatest gift I’ll ever know

who taught me how to smile

I’ve seen the ocean before
an amazing site to see
but even more beautiful now
holding you close to me

No storm can keep me away
my love will always be
as the ship of our hearts set sail
over the rolling sea
